Allowing a friend to name one's newborn baby

Question

Is it permissible to allow my friend to make the Khutba and name my new-born baby if I am away or it is all right for my wife to do it?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

You did not mention to us what you meant by Khutbah in your statement “Is it permissible for me to allow my friend to do the Khutbah”, nonetheless, if you meant by Khutbah, presenting a speech which will include glorifying Allaah and exalting the mention of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) on the day of the ‘Aqeeqah of the new-born child, then we do not know any Khutbah that is specially legislated for this purpose, and doing so while believing that it is a Sunnah is an innovation since there is no evidence to substantiate it. However, if it is a custom among the people to bring a preacher on such occasion in order to seize the opportunity and remind and admonish the people, then this is something good.

There is no harm on you as well in allowing your friend or wife or any other person to name your child.

Allaah Knows best.
