Question
I live in the USA and I work at place not purified to do my prayer. Can I perform my prayer in my car?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
It is a condition for the place to be pure in order to perform the prayer, and standing is a pillar for the validity of one’s prayer and prostrating on seven limbs is also one of the pillars for performing the prayer and the prayer without fulfilling these pillars is invalid. Therefore, if there is enough room in your car in a way that you can perform your prayer standing and are able to bow down and then prostrate on seven limbs, then it is permissible for you to perform the prayer in your car. However, if you mean that you are going to perform the prayer in it while sitting down, and just lean your head down for bowing and prostrating, then it is not permissible. It is hard to believe that there is no pure place where you may perform the prayer, even if we presume that this is the case, you may carry a prayer mat and perform your prayer on it. The scholars
are of the view that it is permissible to perform the prayer on an impure ground if a thick carpet is placed on it.
Finally, it should be noted that in principle things are pure, so it is not acceptable to rule that a place is impure just because there is some dust or soil on it, or that people walk on it and the like, as all this does not make the place impure.
