Her ex-husband's cousin wants to embrace Islam to marry her

Question

My friend has been married for 6 years. Almost 2 years ago her husband, who introduced her to Islam, went to work in Saudi Arabia and left her with her daughter in the USA and sent her money as needed. 6 months ago he got married and my friend asked him to come and visit her but he keeps giving her excuses. He hasn't visited her at all since he left. So she asked for divorce. And now she is divorced Islamicly but not in paper. The problem is that she can't support herself and her daughter from previous marriage. She's been talking to a man on the phone (the cousin of her first husband) for a month now and he wants to convert to Islam and marry her. She is in doubt whether to keep talking to him and help him know Islam better. She doesn't know what to do because she needs financial support since she is still a nursing student. Please help.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

It is strictly forbidden in Islam for a woman to have personal relations with any marriageable man even if he is Muslim. The matter becomes worse if the man is a non-Muslim.

If a man embraces Islam willingly and follows its ruling seriously then a Muslim woman can marry him. See the details in Fataawa 83402 and 83611.

As for preaching Islam, your friend may inform a good brother or an Islamic center in her area to contact the person who is interested in Islam to call him to it. As regards the child, it is the father who is responsible to spend on him. See Fatwa 84687.

Allaah Knows best.
