Hadeeth about the dislikeability of changing of the grey hair

Question

Assalamu Alaikum, I have a question in regard to the article about the HAIR. There's one place where we are told to do the opposite of the jews and the christians .ie. to dye our hair because they don't do so. Allah's Apostle said, "The Jews and the Christians do not dye (their grey hair), so you shall do the opposite of what they do (i.e. dye your grey hair and beards)." There's a second place where we get to know the ten things the Prophet(S.A.W) dislikes, and one of them being dyeing grey hair. The Prophet of Allah disliked ten things: Yellow colouring, meaning khaluq, dyeing grey hair, trailing the lower garment, wearing a gold signet-ring, a woman decking herself before people who are not within the prohibited degrees, throwing dice, using spells except with the Mu'awwidhatan, wearing amulets, withdrawing the penis before the semen is discharged, in the case of a woman who is wife or not a wife, and having intercourse with a woman who is suckling a child; but he did not declare them to be prohibited Please do let me which is true and which one is not. Masalams,

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

The predominant opinion is that it is permissible to dye grey hair but not with black color as clarified in Fataawa 86625 and 83976.

As regards the narration which you mentioned in the question, it is a weak narration and it is not authentic from the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ). The narration is reported by Ahmad, An-Nasaa'ee and Abu Daawood may Allaah have mercy upon them. Al-Albaani may Allaah have mercy upon him said: 'This narration is denied.' Moreover, Al-Arnaa'out may Allaah have mercy upon him said: 'It is weak.'

Even if the above narration was to be authentic, it does not contradict the other narrations which say that it is permissible to change the grey hair, as one may understand that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) referred to changing the grey hair with black dye, or that the meaning of changing grey hair, refers to plucking it.

Al-'Atheem Abaadi may Allaah have mercy upon him when interpreting the narration which you mentioned in the question about changing the grey hair, he said: 'Al-Khataabi may Allaah have mercy upon him said: ''It is disliked to change the grey hair with black color but not with red or yellow color…. It was also said that the meaning of changing the hair refers to plucking it out.'

Allaah Knows best.
