Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

We have already issued Fataawa 86274 and 91383 on the ruling of listening to the Quran while playing or working, so please refer to them. We clarified in these Fataawa that listening to the Quran this way is better than not listening to it at all.

As regards the saying of Allaah (which means): {Comes not unto them an admonition (a chapter of the Quran) from their Lord as a recent revelation but they listen to it while they play.} [Quran 21:2]. The expression 'while they play' is interpreted as 'listening to the Quran while mocking it'. It is also interpreted as 'slandering it and complaining about it', and other interpretations were presented in this regard.

There is no doubt that dedicating oneself to the listening of the Quran when it is recited is among the characteristics of the believers, and this is acting on the verse of Allaah which reads (what means): {So, when the Quran is recited, listen to it, and be silent that you may receive mercy [i.e. during the compulsory congregational prayers when the Imaam (of a mosque) is leading the prayer (except chapter Al-Faatihah), and also when he is delivering the Friday prayer Khutbah].} [Quran 7:204]. Therefore, devoting oneself to the listening of the Quran will have a great effect on the listener contrarily to when he is busy doing something else when listening to it.

Allaah Knows best.
