A sick person giving charity to repel his illness

Question

Assalam o alaikum, in pakistan its an usuall thing that when some one gets into trouble of any kind e.g disease they gave sadqa to make that disease away.Is it aright thing? secondly if yes then if sadqa is something eatable then can the members of that family can eat that or not?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

It is permissible for a sick person to give charity in order to repel the illness from him, as the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "Treat your sick people by giving charity." [At-Tabari and Al-Bayhaqi]

The scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them interpreted this narration by giving charity on behalf of the sick, and asking the person to whom the donation is given to supplicate for the sick. This also applies to the sick giving charity on his own behalf.

If one gives charity to the poor members of his family, then he has a double reward, Allaah willing; the reward of giving charity and the reward of keeping ties with kinship, and it is permissible for them to eat from his donation.

Even if the members of the family who were given the charity are rich, it is permissible for them to eat from it, as the scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them stated that it is permissible for the rich to accept the donation, with the exception of the Zakat, since it is not permissible for a rich to accept the Zakat. However, it is permissible for a rich person to accept an optional charity, but it is better for him to apologize and not accept it.

To conclude, it is permissible for a person to whom the charity is given to eat from it whether he is poor or rich, and whether or not he is from the family of the donator.

Allaah Knows best.
