Question

Assalamu alaikum.Thank you for fatwa no.92755. Could you kindly give the complete reference of the Hadis of revelation of Verse 5:3 was on friday at Arafa in both Bukhari and Muslim(Allah's mercy on them).Salaam.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Imaams Al-Bukhari and Muslim may Allaah have mercy upon them reported that Taariq Ibn Shihaab may Allaah be pleased with him narrated [and the wording is Al-Bukhari's]: "Once a Jew said to 'Umar may Allaah be pleased with him: ''O leader of the believers! There is a verse in your Book (i.e. the Quran) which is read by all of you (Muslims), and had it been revealed to us (i.e. the Jews), we would have taken that day (on which it was revealed) as a day of celebration." 'Umar may Allaah be pleased with him asked: "What verse is this?" The Jew replied: "This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion." [Quran 5:3]. 'Umar may Allaah be pleased with him replied: "We certainly know when and where this verse was revealed to the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ); it was the day he sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) was standing at 'Arafah on a Friday." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

The above narration is reported by Imaam Al-Bukhari may Allaah have mercy upon him in many chapters, like the Book of Faith, Chapter: the Increase and Decrease of Faith, and in the Book of Battles, Chapter: the Farewell Message, and in the Book of Tafseer (i.e. interpretation of the Quran), Chapter: the Interpretation of Chapter Al-Maa'idah [Quran chapter 5], and in other chapters.

Imaam Muslim may Allaah have mercy upon him reported the narration in the Book of Tafseer. The narration was also reported by Imaams An-Nasaa'i, At-Tirmithi, and Ahmad may Allaah have mercy upon them.

Allaah Knows best.
