Using Shampoo during Ghusl

Question

Assalamo alaikom, may I ask you a question please. is it permited to perform gusl (tahara koubra, like after sexual intercourse) with soap and shampoo, because I have been told it wasn't. in such a case why would that be knowing that it is more hygienic than plain water alone, and beside that I can't stand doing ghusl with water alone so I find my self showering first with shampoo and soap and then doing ghusl with water alone which I find really hard and tedious and not at all water savy, and it's so much time consuming. isn't islam dino yousr (a religion tending to easiness), insn't islam a religion of faith but also of reason. I would really appreciate your help in this matter. Many thanks in advance.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Washing with water takes place in both cases when water is poured on the whole body to reach every part, whether a Muslim does so before or after washing with soap or shampoo. This is what is required according to Sharee'ah. Passing water on the entire body with the intention of Ghusl (ritual bath) while there is soap or the like on the body does not affect the soundness of Ghusl. No doubt, it is better for the Muslim to take a separate bath using water only so as to follow the way of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) in performing Ghusl, as well as other acts, such as following the proper sequence and beginning with right side, etc.

Allaah knows best.
