The number of wives of Prophets Daawood and Sulaymaan

Question

How many wives did Prophet Dawud and Prophet Suleyman (peace be upon them) each have?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The history and biography books stated that the Prophet Daawood (David) may Allaah exalt his mention had 100 wives, and that the Prophet Sulaymaan (Solomon) had 1,000 wives, among whom were 300 captives (slaves).

Uriah, the mother of Sulaymaan may Allaah exalt his mention was one of the wives of prophet Daawood may Allaah exalt his mention.

Regarding the wisdom why Sulaymaan may Allaah exalt his mention had so many wives, Al-Qurtubi may Allaah have mercy upon him stated: “It is said that Sulaymaan may Allaah exalt his mention was the Prophet who had the largest number of wives because he had the strength of 40 Prophets; and the stronger a person is, the more wives he marries. It is also said that he married so many wives in order to have more tribes supporting him, as each wife has two tribes, one from the father's side and the second from the mother's side, so every time he marries a woman, he gets the support of the two tribes against his enemies. It is also said that the more pious a person is, the stronger his sexual desires are.

Allaah Knows best.
