Reasons Why Al-Aws and Al-Khazraj Tribes Embraced Islam

Question

Why did the Al-Aws and Al-Khazraj tribes embrace Islam?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

It was one of the reasons behind Al-Aws and Al-Khazraj tribes' acceptance of Islam, after the guidance of Allah Almighty for them in the first place, that they used to hear from their Jewish neighbors in Yathrib (Al-Madeenah) that a prophet would be sent at the end of time and that the Jews would follow him and fight the Arabs along with him and kill them in the same manner in which ‘Ad and Iram were killed.

The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, was inviting all tribes and individuals to Islam. However, after the people of Makkah rejected Islam and persecuted the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, and his followers, the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, focused his invitation on people outside Makkah. This happened especially after the death of his uncle, Abu Talib, and his wife, Khadeejah may Allaah be pleased with her.

The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, seized the opportunities where the Arabs used to gather during religious occasions and in commercial markets to invite the tribes to accept Islam and offer protection to the Muslims. During the Hajj season of the eleventh year after the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, had been entrusted with the mission of prophethood, he met some of the people of Yathrib and invited them to Islam, and they became Muslims. That was the beginning of conversion to Islam by the two tribes of Al-Aws and Al-Khazraj.

In Zad Al-Ma‘ad, Ibn Al-Qayyim may Allaah have mercy upon him said:

One of the things which Allah Almighty accomplished for His Messenger, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, was that the tribes of Al-Aws and Al-Khazraj heard from their allies from among the Jews of Al-Madeenah, that 'A Prophet will appear in our time and we will follow him and kill you, in the same manner in which ‘Ad and Iram were killed.' The Ansar used to perform Hajj, as did the Arabs, but not the Jews. So when they saw the Messenger of Allah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, inviting people to Allah during the season of Hajj and they observed his manners, some of them said to the others, "You know, by Allah, O people, that this is the prophet whom you were threatened with by the Jews, so do not let them precede you in following him. So hasten to accept his invitation."

That was the reason of their conversion to Islam.

Allah knows best.
