Impurity of a person who commits Zina

Question

Assalamo Alaikum: Is that true a person who made Zina ( adulterous) saty 40 days withuot a purification or this person stay in state which any good action he do is not acepted during 40 days.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

We are not aware of any evidence from the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) that whoever commits Zina (fornication or adultery) stays impure for a period of forty days or that no good deeds will be accepted from him (during this period).

Performing Ghusl (ritual bath) removes the state of sexual defilement whether it is from Zina or from a permissible sexual intercourse [a man with his wife].

There is no doubt that Zina is one of the grave major sins and the most heinous crimes as we clarified in Fataawa 84637 and 85254. However, saying that the deeds of a person who committed Zina will not be accepted for 40 days or that he becomes impure for this entire period is something that requires religious evidence and we are not aware of any evidence about this.

Allaah Knows best.
