Punishment for wasters of water and food

Question

asawawb, my question is: how will the water wasters be in the hereafter on judgement day?? how many water should be wasted to be called a water waster???
People come and visit us and we make a lot of food and people dont eat, so the food goes to waste, are we called food wasters???

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Some scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them defined extravagance as consuming something in what is permissible but exceeding the limits of what is permissible and this is a dispraised act because Allaah prohibited it as He Says (what means): {…and eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess.}[Quran 7:31] According to the preponderant view of the scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them being extravagant is forbidden but we are not aware of any evidence which states a specific punishment for a spendthrift.

Nonetheless, there is no specific quantity by which someone could be ruled to be extravagant, but the matter differs according to different situations; what could be considered an extravagance in one situation may not be considered as such in another situation.

As regards throwing the remaining food in the dustbin then this is not permissible; rather, this food should be preserved so that one’s family will benefit from it or that it should be given in charity to other people to benefit from it unless it is feared that this food may cause any harm.
