A divorced woman living alone with her daughters

Question

I just read on your website that it is forbidden for a woman to live alone. However, I live alone in my own house with my two daughters since I am divorced and have no family in this country. I don't want to go back to my native country which is in the west. Am I sinful?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

First of all, we ask Allaah to reward you for being keen on doing good, and we ask Him to make us and you firm on His Religion and guide us to the straight path.

You should know that we are not of the view that it is forbidden for a woman to spend the night alone; rather, this is only disliked. The evidence is that Ibn ‘Umar, may Allaah be pleased with him stated that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) forbade being alone, for a man to spend the night alone or to travel alone. [Ahmad]. This Hadeeth means that it is only disliked to do so.

However, this ruling does not apply to your circumstance because you do not spend the night alone but with your two daughters. Since you and your daughters are safe, then it is acceptable for you and your daughters to reside together. There is no doubt that residing in a Muslim country is better and safer for you. Therefore, you should not think of travelling to non-Muslim countries after Allaah had saved you from that.

Allaah Knows best.
