Allaah blaming His Prophets, may Allaah exalt their mention

Question

Howmany times did Allah blame his prophet Mohammed or other prophets? In which Suras? and why?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Allaah blamed His Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) in a soft manner in different occasions in the Quran and we will mention some examples. However, before doing so, it should be mentioned that this type of blaming is similar to that done from someone to that whom he loves, so that serenity will remain as stated by some scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them.

Here are some examples:

1- Allaah Says (what means): {May Allaah pardon you, [O Muhammad]; why did you give them permission [to remain behind]? [You should not have] until it was evident to you who were truthful and you knew [who were] the liars.}[Quran 9:43] This verse was revealed because the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) gave permission to some hypocrites to stay behind in the Battle of Tabook. It should be mentioned here that Allaah mentioned pardon before blaming His Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ).

2- Allaah Says (what means): {He [i.e. the Prophet ( sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ))] frowned and turned away. Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting]}[Quran 80:1-2] This Chapter was revealed because the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) turned away from ‘Abdullah, ibn Umm Maktoom may Allaah be pleased with him who was a Muslim and who came to seek knowledge, but the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) was busy calling some non-Muslim leaders hoping that they would embrace Islam. It should also be mentioned here that Allaah did not address directly the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) by the pronoun ‘you’, rather, it was the third person pronoun [he] that was used.

Other Prophets, may Allaah exalt their mention, were also blamed, like the Prophet Nooh (Noah) may Allaah exalt his mention. Allaah Says [about Nooh’s son] (what means): {He said, “O Noah, indeed he is not of your family; indeed, he is [one whose] work was other than righteous, so ask Me not for that about which you have no knowledge. Indeed, I advise you, lest you be among the ignorant.”}[Quran 11:46]

Allaah Knows best.
