School used to hang students' photos on the wall

Question

As-salamu'aleikum, At my children's school, it is a habit to stick passport-sized photos on the wall of students who study in the same class or who got the highest grades in their class, etc. When they have a party, they take pictures and stick them on the wall, too. Now I am trying my utmost best not to have photos taken of my kids and not to have them stick their photos on the wall, but I feel that the teachers ridicule me a bit for that. They look at me and say, "haram aleish, your daughter wants her picture, too, on the wall, along with her classmates'," or , "what is the problem? who says it's haram to stick photos on the wall?", etc. I feel as if I am alone in my stance against these pictures, and I'm starting to doubt whether it's me or them who's wrong. Please enlighten me. Should I give in to their pressure? Am I too strict, as they imply?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

Contemporary scholars hold different opinions on photography. Some of them are of the opinion that it is excluded from the forbidden image-making, and others are of the opinion that it is included in it. Our view, however, is that it is safer to avoid photography unless there is necessity or need for it, to avoid the difference of opinion. Please refer to Fatwa 87765.

However, if it is necessary or there is a need to take photos, or according to the opinion that permits it, then it is permissible to hang those photos, as long as they are not among the photos which are forbidden to be hung in principle, such as photos that include impermissible exposure of women's adornment. Therefore, if such photos are of little girls, then probably the sound opinion is that it is permissible to hang them. If they, however, are photos of girls of an age at which they could be desired, aged nine or the like, then it is not permissible to hang them, and you have the right to insist on not hanging them. Finally, it is more appropriate that those in charge of this school do not hang the photos of any living creatures, and instead they hang photos of gardens and natural landscapes. For more benefit, please refer to Fatwa 83193.

Allaah Knows best.
