Wants to marry a religious girl whose family is not religious

Question

Asalamu Alakumm
Jazakum allah khear for your work and effort, I have alhamdullah recently graduate and I am now looking to complete half of my deen. There is this practising sister at my university which mashallh dress modestly and is always involved in Islamic events, charity organisations for Palestine, attending study circles and even teaching the children deen in the masjed. now the only problem is that her family are really not practising, what I mean by that is that her sisters have had previous relationships with other people before & her brother goes night clubbing & I found that the community are always talking about them and saying bad things, I should also mention that they have lost one of their parents which might have worsened the situation for them. Now wallha that does not concern me it is just that I am worried about my younger sister who might be somehow influenced by her other sisters. and I am just not sure if this marriage is gone cause a lot of problems for my family, by Allah I ask you to try your best to answer my question as soon as possible & not to post my question online as I don’t want to hurt her.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

If this girl has these good qualities which you mentioned, then she is suitable to be a wife for you as there are not so many girls like her especially in that environment where you live. The fact that her family is bad is not a problem since she is herself righteous. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: Choose the religious one, you will prosper.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim] The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) mentioned the religion of the woman and he did not mention the religion of anyone else. Moreover, marrying her could be a means of saving her from that bad environment, and Allaah may make both of you a means to guide her family.

As regards your younger sister, you should try to protect her from those people and prevent her from socializing with them. You and your wife may cooperate in nurturing her and guiding her, especially that you mentioned that your wife is interested in children and teaching them in the mosque.

Finally, we advise you to perform Istikhaarah prayer in regard to this marriage; if there is any good for you in it, Allaah will make it easy for you, otherwise he will drive it away from you. For more benefit, please refer to Fatwa 81434.

Allaah Knows best.
