Visiting a Christian neighbor is a good deed

Question

I have a Christian neighbor and we visit each other. I have noticed that other Muslim neighbors are very close to her. They stay late at her house and go out with her frequently. I would like to know if this is the kind of allegiance is prohibited in the Quran. Is it possible to take a Christian woman to be my best close friend? If it is impermissible, should I draw my neighbors’ attention to this or should I remain silent?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

There is no blame on you for visiting your Christian neighbor. Visiting your Christian neighbor may even be considered an aspect of righteousness and a way to fulfill your duties towards your neighbors. This is so, provided you do not befriend her and have affection for her, because this would contradict the obligatory disassociation with polytheists. You have to advise your Muslim neighbors who have relations with this Christian woman with what you have learnt in this Fatwa.

Allaah Knows best.
