Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

First of all, may Allaah reward you for quitting smoking after making your oath, and we ask Him to safeguard you in the future and reward your wife for her keenness on guiding you and urging you to abandon anything that is disgraceful. Indeed, this is the position of a pious woman.

Indeed, smoking is forbidden and it has bad effects on the person in his religion as well as his worldly matters. For more benefit, please refer to Fataawa 81589 and 81345.

The prohibition is even more confirmed with the oath that you made, so if you return to smoking, the sin is even greater, and you will have to expiate for breaking your oath. For more information on expiation, please refer to Fatwa 82501.

Besides, you should know that if you are really determined to quit smoking and avoid keeping company with evil friends who might make smoking good in your eyes, then Allaah will enable you to quit smoking and make you hate it. Allaah Says (what means): {If they had been true to Allaah, it would have been better for them.}[Quran 47:21]

Moreover, it is confirmed that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said about one of his Companions: “He was truthful towards Allaah (i.e. he sincerely asked Allaah for his wish), so Allaah was truthful towards him (i.e. He granted him what he wanted).

Therefore, you should stop let smoking dirty your mouth with which you mention Allaah.

Allaah Knows best.
