Question
If everything has already been predestined by Allaah, then what is man’s role in marriage and the like?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and messenger.
There is no atom in this whole universe except that Allaah created it, predestined it and arranged its affairs. So, anything that befalls a person, whether it is good or bad, or does except the Allaah predestined it, whether it is marriage or anything else.
However, Allaah has endowed man with freedom, choice and ability to act and seek his welfare. Therefore, man must not be indolent depending on predestination, rather, he must exert the effort to maintain his chastity by finding a good wife for himself, who encourages him to obey Allaah.
To sum up, man’s role in seeking his welfare is to exert the effort and choice and utilize the available means together with supplicating Allaah for guidance and success.
