The cure for pride and arrogance

Question

How can we help members of Islamic movements to get rid of pride and arrogance?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The cure for pride and arrogance in the Islamic movement or any other is by remembering the following:

• Remembering the Greatness of Allah, The Almighty, and that Pride is one of His Attributes. In a Hadeeth on the authority of Abu Hurayrah may Allaah be pleased with him the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) reported that Allah The Almighty said that Pride, Glory and Greatness are among His Attributes which none of His creation shares with Him. Thus, he who claims to possess such qualities, Allah will punish him and doom him to Hell. [Muslim]

• Remembering man's origin and weakness. Allah Says (what means): {He created man from a sperm-drop; then at once he is a clear adversary} [Quran 16:4]

• Remembering the punishment for pride and arrogance. In a Hadeeth on the authority of Ibn Mas‘ood may Allaah be pleased with him the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) informed that he who harbors pride in his heart, even equal to the weight of a grain of mustard seed, will not enter Paradise. [Muslim]

• Remembering that arrogance causes defeat and failure. Allah Says (what means): {And do not be like those who came forth from their homes insolently and to be seen by people.} [Quran 8:47] this refers to the people of Quraysh when they went into the Battle of Badr.

• Remembering that modesty, in contrast, results in might, honor and superiority. In a Hadeeth on the authority of Abu Hurayrah may Allaah be pleased with him the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) stated that nobody becomes modest and humbles himself for the sake of Allah, but Allah raises and honors his status.

Allah Knows best.
