Revealed perceptible evidence on the existence of Allaah

Question

How can I be sure that Allaah The Almighty exists?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

There are two pieces of evidence for the existence of Allaah The Almighty: one is revealed and the other is perceptible. The revealed evidence is the verses of Allaah The Almighty in His noble Book. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means):

· {Allaah witnesses that there is no deity except Him, and [so do] the angels and those of knowledge - [that He is] maintaining [creation] in justice. There is no deity except Him, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.} [Quran 3:18]

· {And He is Allaah, [the only deity] in the heavens and the earth. He knows your secret and what you make public, and He knows that which you earn.} [Quran 6: 3]

· {Or do they have gods to defend them other than Us?} [Quran 21:43]

The Inventor of all things is The Almighty, and He acknowledges His existence and that He is the Lord of the universe. Allaah The Almighty is the most sufficient witness. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {But is it not sufficient concerning your Lord that He is, over all things, a Witness?} [Quran 41: 53]

The second piece of evidence is attained through contemplation and reflection on this vast universe and by traveling in the land to draw lessons from the fate of past nations. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means):

· {Say, [O Muhammad], "Travel through the land and observe how He began creation. Then Allaah will produce the final creation. Indeed Allaah, over all things, is competent."} [Quran 29:20]

· {We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth. But is it not sufficient concerning your Lord that He is, over all things, a Witness?} [Quran 41: 53]

Allaah The Almighty urged the creation to reflect on this universe and to know its secrets in order to believe in their Creator. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means):

· {And on the earth are signs for the certain [in faith] * And in yourselves. Then will you not see?} [Quran 51: 20-21]

In the course of talking about the existence of the Creator in order to oblige the slaves to acknowledge their Lord and worship Him Alone, Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {Or were they created by nothing, or were they the creators [of themselves]?* Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Rather, they are not certain.* Or have they the depositories [containing the provision] of your Lord? Or are they the controllers [of them]?} [Quran 52: 35-37]

In these verses, Allaah The Almighty addresses those people who deny the existence of their Creator. He clarifies that their existence and the existence of the heavens and earth are undeniable facts. It is logically established that there should be a reason for all things that exist. Even those who herd camels in the vast desert realize this, although such people do not know anything other than this daily chore. Once a shepherd was asked how he knew his Lord, he answered that just as footprints denote that there were people walking, similarly, the heavens, the earth and this whole creation denote the existence of the Great Creator for they cannot exist by themselves.

How can a person claim that the heavens, the earth, or he himself exists without a Creator Who disposes of affairs, the Mighty, the Knowing, Who has the keys of everything? Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {Say, [O Muhammad], "To whom belongs the earth and whoever is in it, if you should know?"* They will say, "To Allaah." Say, "Then will you not remember?"* Say, "Who is Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of the Great Throne?"* They will say, "[They belong] to Allaah." Say, "Then will you not fear Him?"* Say, "In whose hand is the realm of all things - and He protects while none can protect against Him - if you should know?"* They will say, "[All belongs] to Allaah." Say, "Then how are you deluded?"} [Quran 23: 84-89] If the slave knows that the Creator exists, then he must necessarily draw himself closer to Him through worshipping Him and seeking His pleasure.

Allaah Knows best.
