Insanity does not take a Muslim out of the fold of Islam

Question

A MUSLIM WOMAN IF DRIVEN INSANE IN SOME PART OF HER LIFE,due to some EMOTIONAL SHOCK WILL BE CONSIDERED A MUSLIMAH?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

Insanity is not considered a valid cause for a Muslim leaving Islam; an insane Muslim remains a Muslim. However, the insane person is not held accountable for his deeds even if he commits acts of disbelief; because sanity is the key component on which religious duties and assignments depend. An insane person is incompetent for religious assignments. ‘Ali may Allaah be pleased with him reported that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “The Pen has been lifted from three: from the sleeping person until he wakes up, from the young person until he reaches puberty, and from the insane person until he regains his sanity.” [Abu Daawood]

If this woman passed away while insane, she should be properly given the ritual Ghusl for the deceased, enshrouded, buried in the Muslim graveyard, the funeral prayer should be offered for her, and her (Muslim) relatives inherit her wealth.

Allaah Knows best.
