Taking multiple vows with the intention to repeat the expiation

Question

Assalaamu alaykum. I took three vows for a single matter. My intention at the time of taking the vows was that they were three vows so that if I broke them I would have to offer the expiation three times. Do I have to offer three expiations or just one?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

You must expiate according to your intention; Khaleel said in his Mukhtasar, “(The expiation is repeated) if he intended the repetition of breaking the oath...

Ibn Al-Haajib said in Jaami’ Al-Ummahaat, “Breaking the oath is not repeated by repeating the action unless there is a term (wording) that indicates it, such as ‘whenever I did that’ or ‘as long as I do’ … or that he intended it or that the intention was customary.

Allaah knows best.
