Meeting Allaah on the Day of Resurrection

Question

Does man meet His Lord when he dies or will he only see Him if he enters paradise?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

Evidence in Sharee'ah indicates that the believers will meet their Lord after they die. Allaah the Almighty Says (what means):

· {And fear Allaah and know that you will meet Him. And give good tidings to the believers.} [Quran 2:223]

· {Whoever should hope for the meeting with Allaah - indeed, the term decreed by Allaah is coming. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing.} [Quran 29:5]

· {Those are the ones who disbelieve in the verses of their Lord and in [their] meeting Him, so their deeds have become worthless; and We will not assign to them on the Day of Resurrection any importance.} [Quran 18:110]

· {Who are certain that they will meet their Lord and that they will return to Him.} [Quran 3:46]

· {Their greeting the Day they meet Him will be, "Peace." And He has prepared for them a noble reward.} [Quran 33:44]

On the authority of ‘Adiyy ibn Haatim may Allaah be pleased with him the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: "Allaah the Almighty will talk to the believers directly on the Day of Resurrection, without any interpreter between them" [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah may Allaah be pleased with him the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: "The believers will see their Lord on the Day of Resurrection as clearly as they see the sun at midday and the full moon" [Muslim]

On the authority of ‘Ubaadah ibn As-Saamit may Allaah be pleased with him the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: "Whoever would like meeting with Allaah the Almighty, Allaah the Exalted would like meeting with him and whoever would dislike meeting with Allaah the Almighty, Allaah the Exalted would dislike meeting with him" [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

All these proofs indicate that meeting Allaah the Almighty includes seeing Him. Ibn Taymiyyah may Allaah have mercy upon him stated that meeting with Allaah the Exalted is interpreted by some scholars to mean clearly seeing Him. They also state that meeting Allaah the Exalted involves seeing Him, which is referred to in the verses talking about meeting with Him, and this is evidence against those sects who deny that we will see Allaah the Almighty on the Day of Resurrection, such as the Jahmiyyah, the Mu‘tazilah, and others.

The apparent meaning of these verses indicates that disbelievers will also meet their Lord and see Him on the Day of Resurrection. This is the opinion of some of the Salaf (Righteous Predecessors), which is indicated by the Saying of Allaah the Almighty (which means): {O mankind, indeed you are laboring toward your Lord with [great] exertion and will meet it. Then as for he who is given his record in his right hand. He will be judged with an easy account. And return to his people in happiness. But as for he who is given his record behind his back, he will cry out for destruction and [enter to] burn in a Blaze.} [Quran 84:6-12]

However, the disbelievers seeing Allaah the Almighty does not entail an honor or blessing for them, rather it will be followed by concealment and deprivation. Allaah the Almighty Says (what means): {No! Indeed, from their Lord, that Day, they will be veiled} [Quran 83:15]

The finest and most perfect meeting with Allaah the Almighty will happen after believers enter Paradise and see their Lord, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Never will they be given a blessing greater than seeing Allaah the Almighty. This is authentically reported in Hadeeths and unanimously agreed upon by Ahlus-Sunnah (the People of the Sunnah).

In sum, both believers and disbelievers will meet their Lord on the Day of Resurrection, but only believers will see their Lord in Paradise.

Allaah Knows best.
