Question

Assalaamu alaykum. We know that there will be no sleep or work in paradise, and also that we will have everything that we desire. Here in the worldly life, we have objectives and life is unpredictable, but what about in paradise? What is the objective there, to praise God Almighty and have fun all day long?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

Life in Paradise can never be compared to the life of this world. The people of Paradise shall not experience boredom or weariness, driving them to aspire to any other place, therein. Indeed, they will find their utmost hopes and aspirations in Paradise. Allah, The Exalted, says (what means): {Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds - they will have the Gardens of Paradise as a lodging wherein they abide eternally. They will not desire from it any transfer.} [Quran 18:107-108]

Ibn Katheer may Allaah have mercy upon him wrote, "(They will not desire from it any transfer) emphasizes their desire for it and love of it. One might imagine that a person who is to stay in one place forever would get tired and bored of it, so Allah, The Exalted, informs us that despite this eternal stay therein, they will never choose to change place or move from where they are." [Tafseer Ibn Katheer]

Allah, The Exalted, says (what means): {And they will say: Praise to Allah, Who has removed from us (all) sorrow. Indeed, our Lord is Forgiving and Appreciative - He Who has settled us in the home of duration out of His bounty. There touches us not in it any fatigue, and there touches us not in it weariness (of mind).} [Quran 35:34-35] As-Sa‘di may Allaah have mercy upon him commented on the verses saying, "The home of duration (Daar Al-Muqaamah) means the home of eternal abode; the home in which one desires to stay forever because of the many good things therein and the ongoing delight and the absence of worries and grief."

It is advisable that the Muslim concentrates his efforts on carrying out the good and righteous deeds that would help him attain Paradise.

Allah knows best.
