Eclipse has no effect on babies born on its day

Question

Assalaamu alaykum. Are there any bad consequences for the child born on the day of an eclipse? Is there any bad thing if a husband & wife intercourse on the day of eclipse? Is it true that if a child is born on the day of an eclipse, he could have some physical defect?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

There is no evidence indicating that it is a bad thing for a child to be born on the day of eclipse or that he could have some sort of physical defect as a result. There is also no proof that if a husband has intercourse with his wife and she becomes pregnant on that day the child will be born sick or defective.

Such false claims are mostly the product of lay people's illusions reflecting their attempts to find a connection between astronomical events and the events that take place on earth. Similar practices were found in the pre-Islamic era. Al-Mugheerah ibn Shu'bah, may Allah be pleased with him, said, "On the day of Ibraaheem's death, the sun eclipsed, and the people said that the eclipse was due to the death of Ibraaheem (the son of the Prophet, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam). The Prophet, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said, 'The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse because of someone's death or life. So when you see them, invoke Allah and pray till the eclipse is clear.'" [Al-Bukhari]

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen may Allaah have mercy upon him wrote, "Thus, the Prophet, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, invalidated the claim that there is a connection between earthly events and astronomical states." [Majmoo‘ Fataawa Ibn ‘Uthaymeen]

Allah knows best.
