The name of Allaah The Almighty: Al-Mu’min

Question

Al-Mu’min is one of the names of Allaah the Almighty, what does it mean?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad  sallallaahu  `alayhi  wa  sallam ( may  Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

There are many opinions about the meaning of the name of Allaah 'Al-Mu’min':

- Ibn Katheer  may  Allaah  have  mercy  upon  him reported from ibn ‘Abbaas  may  Allaah  be  pleased  with  him that it means He who assured His creatures that He will never do them injustice.

- Qataadah  may  Allaah  have  mercy  upon  him said it means He who assured creation by describing Himself as Al-Haqq (The Truth).

- Zayd  may  Allaah  have  mercy  upon  him said it means He who believes His believing servants that they are truthful in their belief in Him.

- Al-Qurtubi  may  Allaah  have  mercy  upon  him said it means He who confirms the truthfulness of His Messengers through the miracles that He gave them, who will who will fulfill his promise to believers to reward them and who will punish disbelievers as He promised them.

- It also means that it is He who secures His allies from punishment and His servants from injustice. Allaah the Almighty Says (what means): {and secured them from fear} [Quran 106:4]

- Mujaahid  may  Allaah  have  mercy  upon  him said it means He who announced His Oneness by saying (what means): {Allaah witnesses that there is no deity except Him} [Quran 3:18]
