How to Deal with LGBT Community

Question

How should I treat the LGBT community as a Muslim?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

In addition to believing that homosexuality [LGBT or any sexual deviation] is forbidden and that it is a despicable and heinous evil act, a Muslim should deal with those who commit this wrongdoing in a manner that achieves two benefits:

1- His own benefit and the benefit of those under his care and guardianship: by hating this immorality, staying away from its filthiness, and being saved from its evil.

2- The benefit of those who are sinful and who indulge in it: by calling them to the truth, advising them and admonishing them, clarifying that it is abominable, and to establish that it is harmful, and warn them against its danger. This should be done in a manner that appropriate to the time and place. Also, it should be done with a scientific approach that refutes the misconceptions of the westerners who promote this immorality, justify it and legalize it.

Indeed, we have a good example in our Prophet Loote may Allaah exalt his mention in inviting his people and admonishing them with good words and good preaching, as Allah Says (what means): {The people of Lot denied the messengers. When their brother Lot said to them, “Will you not fear Allah? Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. So fear Allah and obey me. And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds. Do you approach males among the worlds. And leave what your Lord has created for you as mates? But you are a people transgressing.” They said, ‘If you do not desist, O Lot, you will surely be of those evicted.” He said, “Indeed, I am, toward your deed, of those who detest [it]. My Lord, save me and my family from [the consequence of] what they do.”} [Quran 26:160-169]

As-Si’di may Allaah have mercy upon him said in his Tafseer:

They were -along with their disbelief -committing an immorality that no one preceded them to it in the worlds. They choose to have sex with the males, which is a filthy, evil and abominable act, and abandon what Allah created for them from among their wives; this is due to their transgression and aberration. Prophet Loote continued to advise them until {They said} to him {‘If you do not desist, O Lot, you will surely be of those evicted.”; i.e. from the town. When he noticed that they were persisting in it, he said: {“Indeed, I am, toward your deed, of those who detest [it]}; i.e. who hate it, who forbid it, and warn against it; [then he said] {My Lord, save me and my family from [the consequence of] what they do.”}; i.e. from doing that act and its punishment, so Allah responded to his supplication.
