Allaah The Almighty has a foot in a way that suits His greatness

Question

Could you possibly explain the attribute of having feet in relation to Allaah The Almighty and provide evidence?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Ahlus-Sunnah Wal-Jamaa'ah contend that one must believe in all of the names, attributes and actions of Allaah The Almighty as mentioned in the Quran and [authentic] Sunnah (Prophetic tradition) without negating them, stripping them of any meaning, understanding them in an anthropomorphic sense or interpreting them figuratively.

There are several Sharee‘ah (Islamic law) texts proving that Allaah The Almighty has a foot or a leg. Some of these texts are as follows:

1- In a Hadeeth (narration) on the authority of Anas ibn Maalik may Allaah be pleased with him the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said that although large numbers of people are to be thrown into Hell on the Day of Resurrection, Hell will ask for more people to be thrown. When Allaah The Almighty puts His foot inside Hell, it will say that it is satisfied and full. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

2- Ibn ‘Abbaas may Allaah be pleased with them both, said that the Kursi is the place of the feet of Allaah The Almighty, and that the Throne is too great in size to be perceived. [Al-Haakim]

Al-Haakim and Ath-Thahabi may Allaah have mercy upon them declared this Hadeeth as Saheeh.

3- Ibn Khuzaymah may Allaah have mercy upon him said that Allaah The Almighty has a leg.

4- Ibn ‘Uthaymeen may Allaah have mercy upon him said that we must believe that Allaah The Almighty has a foot— or a leg— without understanding this in an anthropomorphic sense and without describing the leg. The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, told us that Allaah The Almighty has a leg or a foot, but he did not describe them. This is understood from the words of Ibn ‘Uthaymeen may Allaah have mercy upon him.

Allaah Knows best.
