The Criterion of Superiority between People Is Piety

Question

Salam aleikum
I was wondering if in islam its allowed that u Think that yr country and People and yr food and culture is better than other People. And the reason for this is bcz the person thinking like this told me there is a hadith where a woman comes to Rasoul Allah and want divorce from her husband bcz he is not from same country or tribe and she was afraid her tribe would die out unless she married somebody from same ( not sure if i explained or understood it in a Good way ) i have come across lot of muslims loving their country and People and culture before anything Else and Only Think their way is the best even when culture goes against islam for example in the bad way the woman is treated . Jazak allahu khairan

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The balance for superiority between the people and favoring some over others is piety, as Allah Says (what means): {Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you.} [Quran 49:13]

Therefore, no one can believe that he is superior over others, simply because he belongs to a given country or having a given culture; rather, the best is the most God-fearing.

This is the only balance that people are weighed against in Islam.

Nonetheless, no one can be denied because of having inclination to his country, his food that he used to eat, and the method of his living that he is accustomed to as long as it does not contradict with the Sharee'ah. But what should be denied is to believe that that country, or culture, or customs are superior to others as this fuels the spirit of blameworthy nationalism, which is rejected by the Sharee'ah.

The Sharee'ah made the only association and strong bond that connects the general Muslims is the religion as Allah Says (what means): {The believers are but brothers.} [Quran 49:10]

If those customs contradict the Sharee'ah, then the matter is very serious.

As for the Hadeeth that you referred to in the question, then we have not come across it.
