Promised to Allah He Will Not Do an Act but Broke His Promise

Question

Dear Brother in Islam, Assalamu alaikum.
Many years ago I promised Allah that I will not do such a act and broke that promise. Made the same promise and again broke it. Apart from repentance do I have to give kaffara. Jazakallah.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Your saying “I promised to Allah to leave such and such an act…” is considered an oath and it leads to the consequences that result from breaking an oath. Therefore, if one does what he promised Allah not to do, then he is obliged to expiate for breaking an oath.

If the promise and breaking the promise is repeated before expiating for breaking the first oath, then it is only one expiation that is required.
