New Convert Forced by Her Atheist Parents to Eat Pork

Question

I am a muslim convert and I live with my parents. They are atheists and in home I am controlled and forced to eat pork sometimes. I have a few months left of high-school, after that I can move from home. The only way for me to move from home now would be to quit school. This would be very hard because it is tough to get a sufficient job without this education. Would it be permissible for me to stay at home a few months until I finish school?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

First of all, we congratulate you upon the blessing of embracing Islam that Allah Almighty has bestowed upon you. We ask Him to protect you and increase you in guidance, piety, and righteousness. We advise you to be keen on seeking beneficial knowledge, performing good deeds, and attending gatherings of goodness and communicating with your brothers in Islamic centers and organizations.

There is nothing wrong with staying with your parents at home and continuing your studies.

As you know, eating pork is forbidden, so try to please your parents and use tricks and cleverness not to eat it; because there is no Islamic necessity for you to eat it. If you find some pressure from your parents, consult your trusted brothers in Islamic centers and others, as you may find some helpful advice and directives from them.

We advise you to supplicate a lot for your parents and ask Allah the Almighty to guide them to the truth and embrace Islam. You should work on everything that can make them want to embrace Islam by showing its virtues and by being kind to them and dealing with them in a good and kind manner.

Allah knows best.
