Wear Hijab and Do Not Care What People Think of You

Question

if someone doesn’t want to wear hijab for fear of criticism from other people, is this shirk or riya? please tell me because i want to wear hijab in 2 years once i graduate from school but i fear the amount of judgement ill receive because no one is really religious here and i don’t want to be a mushrik, but im wearing clothes more modestly now, fixing my hair less, more baggy clothes etc.. will allah still reward me for trying to be more modest? or will it still count as shirk?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

It is obligatory upon you to wear the Hijab from now on immediately, for it is an obligation for every Muslim woman. You are disobedient to Allah Almighty and exposing yourself to His threats if you insist on revealing yourself and removing the Hijab, which is the covering for the head and the neck. Not wearing the Hijab due to fear of people's criticism is not a form of Shirk (associating partners with Allah), but it is disobedience and a major sin.

Moreover, it is Allah, the Exalted, Who is most deserving of your fear and mindfulness of His punishment. Allah the Exalted says (what means): {So Allah alone is more worthy of your fear if you are believers.} [Quran 9: 13]. There is no doubt that your sin decreases by improving the appearance of your clothing and bringing it closer to what is required, but you are still sinful as long as you do not obey Allah in all His commands and do not wear the Hijab as He has ordained for you.

Allah knows best.
