Intended to fast then travelled during the day

Question

He intended to fast in Ramadhaan while he was in his place of residence but then he travelled during the day. What is the juristic ruling?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

If one intended to fast in his place of residence then travelled during the day either willingly or unwillingly, he may break his fast then make up for that day. This is the opinion of the Hanbali scholars and it is the most correct of two narrations reported from Imaam Ahmad may Allaah have mercy upon him. It was also adopted by Al-Muzani may Allaah have mercy upon him and other Shaafiʻi jurists. They based this on evidence including the verse in which Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {So whoever among you is ill or on a journey [during them] - then an equal number of days [are to be made up].} [Quran 2:184]

Jaabir may Allaah be pleased with him narrated that the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, went out to Makkah in Ramadan in the year of the Conquest till he came to Kuraa' Al-Ghameem while fasting and the people also fasted. It was said to him, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, that the fasting was difficult on the people and they were waiting to see what he would do. Then he, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, requested a cup of water after ʻAsr, which he raised while people were looking at him, and then he, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, drank it. So some (of the people) broke their fast while others continued to fast. He, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, was told afterwards that some people continued to fast, so he, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: "These people are the disobedient ones." [Muslim]

Moreover, Ibn ʻAbbaas may Allaah be pleased with him narrated that the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, set out towards Hunayn in the month of Ramadan and some people were fasting while others were not. When the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, mounted his she-camel, he asked for a tumbler of milk or water and put it in the palm of his hand or on his she-camel and the people were looking at him, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. Those who were not fasting told those who were fasting to break their fast (i.e., as the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, had done so). [Al-Bukhari] It was also narrated that Anas ibn Maalik may Allaah be pleased with him intended to travel so he asked for food. He ate and said, "It is an act of the Sunnah (Prophetic tradition)." [Al-Albaani: Saheeh]

Allaah Knows best.
