Cursing a certain disbeliever by name

Question

Is it allowed to judge upon a certain disbeliever after his death that he has entered Hell? For example, saying that Hitler, Lenin or Marx are in Hell.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

Whoever dies in the state of disbelief will enter Hell for sure and will be forbidden from entering Paradise. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means):

· {Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allaah is Islam.} [Quran 3:19]

· {And whoever desires other than Islam as religion – never will it be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.} [Quran 3:85]

The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “None but a Muslim soul will enter Paradise.” [Al-Bukhari]

On the basis of these texts and others, it is valid to judge upon a person who died in the state of disbelief to be one of the dwellers of Hell. However, the living disbelievers are threatened with eternal abode in Hell and painful torment if they die in the state of disbelief. They should not be cursed because there is a possibility that they will repent. The Hanbali scholar Ibn Muflih may Allaah have mercy upon him said, “It is permissible to curse disbelievers in general. There are two opinions on cursing a certain disbeliever by name: Shaykh Taqyyud-Deen said, ‘It is permissible to generally curse those who abandon prayer; however, it is preferable to avoid cursing a certain person by name because he may repent.’

Allaah Knows best.
