It is unlawful to cultivate a narcotic plant

Question

What is the ruling on cultivating a narcotic plant from which drugs are extracted?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

It is impermissible to cultivate any narcotic plants like opium or hemp, due to the statement of Allaah The Almighty (which means): {And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.} [Quran 5:2] and the statement of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa salam: "Whoever invites to an error shall bear its sin and the sin of those who act upon it (after him) to the Day of Judgment." Moreover, the harm caused by that plant to human beings is self-evident and the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa salam, said: "There should be neither harm nor malice." [Maalik]

However, an exception is made in cultivating it for usage in medical purposes such anesthetization for surgery.

Allaah knows best.
