Aunt Wants Her to Marry Someone Who Does Not Pray

Question

My problem is that my aunt (wife of my dad's brother) wants me to marry her sister's son, but I don't want him because I'm only 15 years. I also want someone who knows lots of Deen. I want to be a good Muslim, not to marry someone who does not pray. What do you advise?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

We advise the questioning sister to refuse marriage to anyone who does not perform the prayer. There is no good in such a person and one cannot have confidence in him in any matter.

Obviously the one who neglects the prayer is also more likely to neglect other Islamic obligations.

Know that many scholars consider the person who abandons the prayer due to laziness a Kaafir (non-Muslim) based on the Hadeeth in which the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Between a person and disbelief is abandoning the prayer.” [Muslim]

‘Umar may Allaah be pleased with him said: “The person who abandons the prayer does not have any share in Islam.

Allah knows best.
