Bank Loan to Buy a House

Question

I work in a bank and I can get a loan for a house at a preferential rate. In my country there is no Islamic bank. I want to be independent and I do not want to be near my brothers and their families. Can I take the loan?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

It is forbidden to work in a usury-taking bank, since such a work is a form of cooperation in sin and aggression.

Allah Says (what means): {And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.} [Quran 5:2]

Besides, Jaabir, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said “Allah has cursed the one who consumes Riba (i.e. usury or interest), the one who gives it to others, the one who records it and the one who witnesses it (its transaction).” He sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) added: “All of them are equal in sin.” [Muslim]

A person who works in a usury-taking-bank will eat from his salary, his wife and children will also eat from the same income; maybe he is the one who is in charge of recording or authenticating the contract of Riba (usury and/or interest). This means that such a worker takes part in many acts that incur Allah's Curse and dismiss him from Allah's Mercy.

Thus, dear Brother, it is forbidden for you (and for every Muslim) to work in a Riba bank and you have to look for a lawful job and lawful earnings.

In addition, it is forbidden to take a usurious loan, whether it is for building a house or anything else except in dire necessity. But, if you can live in another house of your friend or relative, or you can rent a house, then it is forbidden for you to take a usurious loan.

For sure, Riba constitutes a major sin and it is the most prohibited thing in Islam. It is also a form of war against the Lord of the earth and the heavens. So, you have to fear Allah, honor His Orders and be careful of His Wrath and Punishment.

We ask Allah, The Great and Almighty, to grant you a lawful sustenance, as it is He who answers sincere supplications.

Allah knows best.
