What to Do for Deceased Husband and Her Children

Question

My husband died on 7 March. What can I do for him now? What can I do for my children?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

We ask Allah – The Almighty – to grant you a great reward and to give you patience in your distress. We ask Him to substitute this misfortune by a better thing that pleases you, and we ask Him to forgive and have mercy upon your deceased husband.

Now, you should first observe an ‘Iddah (waiting period) of four months and ten days if you are not pregnant. But if you are pregnant, then your ‘Iddah terminates as soon as you give birth to your baby regardless of the period of the pregnancy.

While a woman is in her ‘Iddah, she must not leave her home except for a necessity that cannot be achieved otherwise. She should avoid adornments, perfume and exposing herself to marriage proposals. You should also supplicate for your husband seeking Allah's forgiveness for him. If your husband is indebted and you can pay his loans, then doing so is good. As for your duty towards your children, it is to raise them and educate them according to Islam, as such an act is highly rewarded by Allah.

Allah knows best.
