Question

Some days before the menstrual period, I feel a continuous wind passing through my vagina that is uncontrollable. This happens in between prayers and also while reciting Qur'an. I always worry about my ablution being safe. This problem continues after the periods end on normal days too. How can I perform my prayers purely?

Answer

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions. There is a disagreement over the rule concerning the wind that passes through the vagina. The Malikis and the Hanafis believe that it does not nullify Wudu because it comes from an exit which is not usual and because there is no evidence for its nullification of Wudu. But the Shafi and Hambali believe that it nullifies Wudu. Their evidence is the general meaning of the Hadith: "Wudu should not be done except if there is a sound or a smell" . They also compared it to everything that comes out from the two exits. This last opinion is safer and it is supported by more evidence. But your Wudu is not nullified unless you are certain that wind has actually passed. From the above, we tell the dear sister that her Wudu is nullified when she hears a sound or has the smell of wind. If this becomes so frequent that she cannot assure her purity for prayer, then she has to deal with it in the same way people deal with incontinence of urine. (Read Fatwa: 82085). She makes Wudu for each prayer in its time and does not care about anything, that comes out during the prayer. Allah knows best.
