Question

I have been asked by a friend to enquire concerning bottle-feeding children after two years of age and the use of a teat as a soother or comforter? Is there a prohibition for using these after the age of two?

Accepted Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

Islamic Sharee’ah does not object to using bottle feeders or teats to sooth the child or comfort him unless this has any bad effect on the child. Now, if using such devices can be of any harm, then it is unlawful to use them. But as far as we know, these things are harmless. So, there is no objection to using them until they are proved to be harmful.
