A divorced woman in Iddah wants to continue her school

Question

Can a woman continue to attend her school for Islamic studies, as she is got divorced just one week ago, she is in her final year of Aalima course? Is she committing any sin continuing her school?

Answer

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions. There is no harm for a divorced woman who is still in her 'Iddah to go out for the studies or for any other compulsory work. The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) permitted this in a Hadith reported from Jabir that he said: My maternal aunt was divorced, and she intended to pluck her dates. A person scolded her for having come out (during the period of 'Iddah). She came to Allah's Prophet (peace be upon him) and he said: Certainly you can pluck (dates) from your palm trees, for perhaps you may give charity, or do an act of kindness. However, you must go out fulfilling the conditions of Islamic Shariah, i.e. wearing Hijab, avoiding perfumes, make up, etc. Allah knows best.
