Repeating the same Surah following Surah Fatihah in every Rak’ah

Question

Is it true that reciting the same Surah after Surah Fatihah in every Rak’ah makes the prayer Makrooh?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Repeating the same Surah (Chapter) after Al-Faatihah in more than one Rak'ah is permissible for the Saying of Allaah (which means): {…so recite what is easy [for you] of the Quran.} [Quran 73:20]

But it is better to recite a different Surah in the second Rak'ah since it was the common practice of the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ). However, sometimes he repeated the same Surah in both Rak'ahs as reported in Abu Dawood may Allaah have mercy upon him that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) recited Surah Az-Zalzalah [Quran 99] in both Rak'ahs of Fajr.

Shaykh Al-Albaani may Allaah have mercy upon him graded this Hadeeth as Hassan.

The Hadith proves that although it is permissible, to recite the same Surah, it is better to follow the common practice of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ).

Allaah Knows best.
