Injustice among the youth and elders

Question

In Islam why it is the younger ones are always at a disadvantage, because in any strained relations the younger ones must ask for forgiveness, be humble, be courteous and as for the elder ones, although in the wrong, are arrogant and higher and most of the times do not give way? Is this fair in Islam? Please advise.

Answer

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.

Among the conducts and morals that Islam ordered and urged people to do is to respect elders and honour them, and to be affectionate and merciful towards young people. Al-Thimidhi reported that Anas narrated that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said: "He is not amongst us who is not merciful to the young people and does not respect and honour the elders."

One of the important rules of our religion is that injustice is forbidden. Imam Muslim reported in his Sahih that Jabir Ibn Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with him and his father, narrated that Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said: "Fear the injustice, as it is darkness on The Day of Judgement."

So injustice is forbidden whether it is from an elderly person or from a young person. Being old in age is not a justification for a person to commit injustice, and being young is not a justification to accept injustice, and it is not permissible to return this to the religion of Islam.

Islam advocates that all Muslims be kind and affectionate, especially among relatives. If there is a misunderstanding between two Muslims, they have to fear Allah and solve their problem according to Shariah (Islamic jurisprudence).

It is not permissible for them to hate each other dispute or quarrel. Imam Muslim reported that Abu Ayub Al Ansari, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the prophet (sallallahu alahui wa sallam) said: "it is not permissible for a man to abandon his brother for more than three days. They meet, but each one of them refuses to greet the other, however, the best of the two of them is one who starts saying 'salaam'(greets first)".

Allah knows best.
