Question

I am 19 and a man who is 38 has introduced to marry me and he is a very good man but he is older than me with 19 years I am worried but my parents want me to marry him. Please help me with my problem.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

If the man who has proposed to get married to you is pious of noble character, and is adherent to Islam, then you should not hesitate in accepting his proposal after performing Istikharah and consulting pious people. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "When someone with whose religion and character you are satisfied asks for your daughter in marriage, accede to his request. If you do not do so, there will be trials on Earth and extensive corruption." They asked “If there is some thing in him? (i.e., if he is poor or not of high-born should we accept him?) He replied: 'When someone with whose religion and character you are satisfied asks for your daughter in marriage, accede to his request. He repeated it thrice. [At-Tirmithi, Nasaa'ee and Ibn Maajah]

Therefore, the criteria of acceptance or rejection of the proposal of a man is his adherence to the teachings of Islam and noble character. So, the proposal of such a man is not rejected based on other worldly matters, especially if your parents are satisfied with him. In fact, the parents always aspire to benefit of their children and generally their selection is good for their children.

Know that age difference does not matter in this case. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) married Khadeejah may Allaah be pleased with her who was much older than him, as he married 'Aa'ishah may Allaah be pleased with her who was younger than his daughter Faatimah may Allaah be pleased with her.

Finally, we advise you to consult reliable and experienced people of your family, and ask Allaah to bestow upon you His favor and grant you a happy and successful life in this world and in the Hereafter as well.

Allah knows best.
