Question

I would like to ask you question, there is a male student at my college whom is practicing. I would like to ask my mother for me to marry him, but he is shorter than me. Is that a bad thing, please give me Fatwa.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

If this man is religious and has a good moral character, then there is no harm on you, Inshaa' Allaah, to accept to marry him. Indeed religion and a good moral character are the most important characteristics in considering marriage. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "If a man whom you are pleased with his religion and moral qualities proposes for marriage, then marry him." The fact that this man is shorter than you is not an obstacle according to religion or even according to the customs and traditions. Allaah may reward you much for marrying him. Finally, we remind you that you are a marriageable person for him, so he should not be alone with you, or the like. We also remind you that before making any step regarding marrying this man you should pray Istikhaara.

Allaah knows best.
