Fatwa CenterTaking vital medication during Ramadan
Question
I have a heart disease which is Mitral Valve prolapsed, and I take Metoprolol (beta-blocker) every 12 hours to regulate the heart beats.. I try my best to wake for Suhoor during Ramadhaan and take the medicine, but when I sleep until after Fajr, I don't fast that day to take the medicine.. Is what I do right? And should I eat normally all day if I don't fast that day?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
If someone breaks the fast for a valid reason in Ramadan, he does not have to fast the remainder of that day since it was permissible for him to break the fast. So he can eat and drink and have sexual intercourse with his wife if she was not fasting for a valid reason as well.
