Is it compulsory to inform the fiancée about the disease?

Question

For marriage, if a male or female was on psychiatric pills for a year or two. Is it important to tell the other family about it?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

If this psychological disease is a kind of madness then it is a deficiency for which the marriage contract can be nullified. The same thing applies if it is a kind of whispers or epilepsy as the patient could abuse and harm others. Some jurists may Allaah have mercy upon them stated that this is considered among the deficiencies (for which the marriage contract can be nullified). So one has to inform the other party (the person who proposes for marriage), as usually people keep away from (those who are affected with) these kind of diseases. But if the disease is other than what has been mentioned and it is something that is common and which people do not shun away from, then it is not obligatory to inform the person who proposes for marriage about it.

Allaah knows best.
