Wants Christian wife to convert to Islam

Question

I am married to a Christian woman and I didn't calculate the consequences of such marriage. I was hopping that she will convert one day to Islam. I have tried with to convert her unsuccessfully into Islam. She is so attached to her faith and I therefore, I have no alternative accept to divorce her. Am I doing the right think, especially that I don't have any children with her and if so what the Fiqh says about this matter.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Marrying a woman from the People of the Book is permissible but it leads to many disadvantages and harms such as:

1- The women of the people of the Book are generally not chaste as they have boyfriends, whereas chastity is one of the conditions for the permissibility of marrying a woman of the People of the Book.

2- Even if the condition of chastity is met, it is not certain that she remained upon her religion of origin. The women of the People of the Book generally tend to be secular or atheist or cling to other beliefs that deviated from Christianity.

3- Even if it is confirmed that she is a chaste woman from the People of the Book, if a Muslim man has children with her, it is almost certain that she will affect them in their religion and conduct.

Therefore, we think that it is more appropriate to divorce this woman since you have no children with her, especially that you have no desire to stay with her.

We advise you to marry a religious Muslim woman of good moral character who will be a comfort to your eyes and who will undoubtedly bring up your children according to Islamic beliefs and teach them good moral conduct.

Allaah Knows best.
