Marriage to a girl who curses the Prophet's companions

Question

Can a Muslim who is Hafez-e-Qur'an marry a girl who believes that the Prophet's, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, companions became apostate and curses them? Her parents have no objection to the marriage. If yes then what can be the things he needs to do?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

It is known that having religious criterion in choosing a husband is religious conviction and good moral conduct. It is confirmed that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam , said regarding choosing a husband: If a man whose religion and good moral conduct are pleasing to you asks to marry your daughter, you should marry her off to him.” [At-Tirmithi]

As for choosing a wife, it is also confirmed that he, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “Choose the religious one, you will prosper.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Therefore, if a man wants to marry a woman who differs with him in creed in the way described in the question, then we do not advise him to marry her, especially since the difference in ideology is in relation to major issues like saying that the Quran is forged, or believing that all but a few of the companions may Allaah have mercy upon them apostated after the Prophet's death, and the like. Our advice is that if a man knows that it is easy for this woman, according to the environment that surrounds her, to change to the belief of Ahlus-Sunnah w’al-Jamaa'ah (the Sunni mainstream), then he can talk to her about this issue. If she agrees, he may marry her; otherwise he should not.

Allaah Knows best.
